Every season in Kerry soccer a new talent is discovered. This season is no exception, and on Friday night in Mounthawk Park Patrick Mccarthy became the latest contender. Making his 1st start of the season for Currans he showed confidence, ability and positional sense that would make "the special one" sit up and take notice.

He was the icing on the cake, as currans have class in abundance, and they encouraged the young player to exhibit his talents where it matters most. Both squads showed the effects of a number of weeks without a game, combined with the time of year and while the game was always competitive there were lapses in play that came from tired limbs.

The game started explosively as currans had the ball in the net after 60 seconds. It came from their danger man Seamus Flynn who won possession on the left wing and made straight for goals and before AC could react the ball was bulging the net.

In the 10th minute AC Athletic midfielder David O'Reilly tried to put the ball behind the currans defence but was denied by an alert Cathal Daly. 4 minutes later Seamus Flynn floated in a ball from the wing but goalkeeper Shane Harty advanced well and cleared the danger.

When Athletic kept the ball on the ground they were causing the currans defence major problems and on several occasions John Daly came to the rescue. Athletic drew level in the 12th minute when reilly switched play with a beautiful pass to John Paul Leahy, Leahy floated the ball into the box where David Leahy finished at the 2nd attempt after Kevin Moran had twarthed his 1st effort.

On the half hour des benson won the ball well inside his own half and floated the ball over the AC defence, Patrick McCarthy was 1st to react and he left the defence standing as he bore down on goals and placed the ball past the advancing keeper while the AC defence were appealing for a non-existent offside.

Prior to this AC Athletics best player on the night John Paul Leahy had skinned his marker and floated the ball into the box, normally John Mike Dooley would be raiding in but on this occasion he was unavailable for selection due to other sporting commitments.

Flynn could have scored another goal in the 35th minute when he volleyed a poor kick out but Shane Harty redeemed himself with an excellent save. Referee Kevin O'Regan playe a good advantage in the final minute of the half, Cathal Daly was fouled on the edge of his own area but the ball came to John McGaley and he released Flynn whose effort was blocked by Mark Walshe. The rebound was hit on the half volley by McCarthy but Harty again saved well.

Two minutes into the 2nd half seamus Flynn proved he can take a tackle or two,he was boxed in by Barry Walshe and Stephen Goggin but with superb body strength and delicate footwork he released to ball to Noel Crowley, with a quick and deceptive turn of pace Crowley raced to the endline and floated the ball into the box where McCarthy scored with a perfectly placed header.

In the 50th minute a spectacular shot by currans' Kevin Casey was just wide of the far post. The heavy pitch showed in both squads and the mangers used the maximum number of substitutions allowed. Barry Walshe had a well struck free kick saved in the 75th minute and the same player was unlucky in the 80th minute when he had a snap shot from 40 yards that forced moran into making a good save. With seven minutes remaining Athletic were awarded a penalty for alleged hand ball by benson. Walshe scored with a retaken penalty that was saved but not held by Moran and the Athletic penalty king slotted the rebound home for the final goal of the game.
