Dooley strike sends AC into the Premiership.

Kerry hurling star John Mike Dooley was back in action on Sunday morning , despite having been in action in Arklow the previous day, and it was his goal that propelled AC Athletic into the topflight of Kerry soccer for the second time.

Dooley has scored many an important goal for his side over the past few seasons but none more crucial than this one which denied Tralee United the chance of promotion.

AC Athletic’s draw with United was also good news for Currans who are level with AC on points and will also be promoted because the team that they might play if they finish second from 1B are the Park B, who cannot be promoted, because they have an A side in the Premier Division.

The final placing in this division will be sorted when AC Athletic play their game in hand which is against Ballyheigue and a win or a draw will see them go up as champions. If they lose then they will have to play off with Currans for the title so either way both AC and Currans are on their way up to the Premiership for the first time and what an opportunity it affords these sides to mix it with the Killarney Celtic’s and Tralee Dynamos.

Tralee United looked the more likely side to go up was they went on the attack from the off and Jason Morrissey was denied by a good tackle by Eamon Fitzgerald after ten minutes.

Eamon Fitzgerald and Mark Walsh were outstanding at the back for AC as United tried for the league goal. It came when a move started by Keith Mullins and Paul Magee saw Shane O’Dowd race through and beat the keeper with a well struck shot.

This was the goal that United required but AC were not to be denied and just after half time, ace poacher John Mike Dooley made no mistake when he converted a penalty low to the bottom corner of the net.

While both sides went in search of maximum points, AC knew that a point would serve them well and their defence was outstanding, taking no prisoners with Walsh using all his experience in ensuring the ball went dead.

United had a couple of great chances of getting the winner late on but Morrissey and Dowd missed the target and so AC celebrated promotion at least, while they still are in two cup competitions.

Tralee United had a fine season and were just unlucky to come up short but they should be a force next season.
